“MAYODIYA PASS”
To Witness snowfall, second best to experience it in
Arunachal Pradesh is “MAYODIYA”. Besides, TAWANG. The name denotes the land to
worship mother goddess.
Mayo – Mother Goddess
Di – Water
Ya – Land
Aside from snow covered hills and
incredible view at the top– exciting is the terrain to this mystical land, the
sun rises early in the morning and begins to set early by afternoon (around15:30 hrs). Located at
the altitude of 2,655 m above sea level, at Indo-China border. One will really
get a tickle belly while moving up the cliff. Be extremely careful and slow
while moving as on one side rugged hill running along narrow pathway and
bottomless valley on the other side. It is advised, not to drive (four wheeler)
over icy pathway once reached the destination, unless one has plans to go farther or with an expert driver; one might face problem reversing on slippery track. Breathtaking Himalayan
range can be seen in the distance.
WHEN TO VISIT: Winter is the best time to experience snowfall
(November – February). Spring is best time to behold waterfalls, lush green
landscapes, wild flowers (April-May). Avoid monsoons strictly due to
unpredictable road conditions.

HOW TO REACH: By road - One can opt for
either the River way or roadway to ROING from Assam. Assuredly, on smooth
Roadways journey is comfortable and less time consumable. In either ways one
can experience the gentle breeze and immaculate climate of the land. Roing is well connected to all major
cities in Assam. Book a cab or catch a bus under Arunachal Pradesh State
Transport Co. (APSTC) or drive your own car/bike crossing over Dhola-Sadiya
bridge (Asia’s 2nd longest), absolutely a straight road to Roing.
State Transport buses are cheaper any day. Better is to book a cab at Roing to
Mayodiya, local expert driver is what I personally advice on these terrains.
Choice is on the individual. One can take out permit at Shantipur check Gate
for Roing, Pasighat, Dambuk, mayodiya, annini etc.
Distance between ROING to
MAYODIYA is about 60 k: m (nearly 1 ½ - 02 hours). New Tinsukia railway
junction is the nearest station to Arunachal, and from Tinsukia by road it’s about
2 ½ hours straight journey to Roing (85 k: m) depends on speed and halts. From nearest
Dibrugarh Mohanbari Airport to Roing by
road, adds an hour more.

Worth a trip through risky ticklish terrain. |
WHERE TO STAY: A Night stay in ROING would be best for early
morning drive to MAYODIA next day.
Popular spots to look around Roing town are- a tarn called “Sally Lake” and
“Deopani”. If one wishes to explore around more; extend the stay for 1/2 days.
WHERE TO EAT: Eateries
can be found at small towns in- between Assam to Arunachal Pradesh. Try
local food and drinks of Assam @ eateries on the way. Better if one have food
in Roing (a heavy breakfast)before moving, and carry along some snacks and water, tea in thermosteel
flask instead of looking for eatery or tea stalls on the way to Mayodiya.
WHAT TO WEAR: In winters
comfort is in woolen pants/jeans, bomber jackets, windcheaters, skull cap, boots/hiking
shoes, muffler / face mask. For other seasons cotton jackets and shrugs are good,
always wear safer shoes, and carry one extra in bag.
THINGS TO BE NOTED:
Ø In own car/bike, don’t forget to carry along puncture kit, clutch cable, first aid box.
Ø Online car service not operational yet, e.g. Ola, Uber, contact local travel agencies or drop me a message in comment section for assistance.
Ø Keep handy snacks and water, shops/eateries not available everywhere while traveling in Arunachal.
Ø Always keep medicines to avoid feeling of nausea, sweet & tangy candies in bag pack/handbag.
Ø ILP (inner line permit) is must to enter restricted areas in Arunachal Pradesh. If coming by flight from
GAU-DIB; an office to draw permit is situated at Mohanbari in Assam, falls off the airport.
*Hope to reach wanderers and nature lovers, to grab your attention to explore the anesthetic beauties of northeast India.
